What is the DVSA Practical Driving Test?

The DVSA practical driving test is the official assessment you must pass to obtain a full UK driving licence. Conducted by an approved DVSA examiner, the test lasts approximately 40 minutes and takes place on public roads around your chosen test centre.

What Does the Test Include?

Marking: Faults and Failures

Driving Fault (Minor)

Up to 15 driving faults — you can still pass. More than 15 = automatic fail.

Serious Fault

One serious fault = automatic fail. A potentially dangerous action or omission.

Dangerous Fault

One dangerous fault = automatic fail. The examiner may have to intervene.

Top Tips for Passing First Time

Take sufficient lessons — DVSA recommends an average of 47 hours with a professional instructor

Practise manoeuvres until they are second nature

Get familiar with the roads around your chosen test centre

Check mirrors frequently and make your observations visible to the examiner

Use the MSPSL routine at every junction (Mirror, Signal, Position, Speed, Look)

Complete a mock test with your instructor before the real thing
